Some NFT marketplaces have a lax verification process for digital artists listing NFTs. As you would expect, this often leads to the proliferation of counterfeit NFTs. The way this works is that bad actors turn works they do not own into NFTs and sell them. Once it becomes known that these works are, in fact, counterfeits, innocent buyers are practically left with NFTs that are valueless.
